Darrell Issa Will Go Down. Unless…
The man who came within a whisker (about 5000 votes) of beating Darrell Issa in the race for California’s 49th Congressional District in 2016 is ex-Marine, Doug Applegate. So, you would think the Democrats would get their act together, and back Doug to the hilt to get him to win in 2018. Not so fast — this is the modern Democratic party we’re talking about.
Now we have a newcomer, Mike Levin, also a Democrat, with deeper ties to the party establishment and an otherwise compelling coalition of new-age business and environmental activism interests, who also wants to run for the same seat. And Applegate’s people are miffed, understandably.
Isn’t this the kind of problem that a mature political party ought to be able to settle behind closed doors before we snatch yet another crushing defeat from the jaws of a very meaningful victory in a key Congressional race in 2018?
